The Power of the Future: Top 5 inventions of Nikola Tesla

For those drawn here from blog posts and other social media sites – I recommend updated post about Nikola Tesla: The Magic of Science.

You wouldn’t be able to read this post or browse via Web, use computers, telephony, cell phones, all media and other electical and wireless devices, if there wasn’t the greatest electrical inventor, physicist, electrical engineer, philosopher, futurologyst, genius who lit the world: Nikola Tesla.

The present is theirs; The future, for which I work, is mine”- said Tesla more than seven decades ago, to journalists gathered in New York City.

There are lot of books written, related to this visionary inventor as well as some of the Tesla’s selected writings. Beside many sources that you can find on Web, his developments and speeches, these are my top 5 inventions of Nikola Tesla:

1. World First AC Generator which led to electrical development and enlightment of the world. This high frequency high volatage electricity is used today in many communication devices.

2. A.C. / D.C. Tesla’s Wireless power Systemincluding certain devices, now considered to be an untouched method to transmit electrical current without wires.

3. Tesla’s Flying Machine. Tesla did patent (#’s –0165513, and 0165514; Method Of Aerial Transportation), a type of Flying Machine, and both powered by his amazing Turbine.

4.. Tesla’s Earthquake Machine

Excerpt from the New York World
Telegram, July 11, 1935 –

Nikola Tesla revealed that an earthquake which drew police and ambulances to the region of his laboratory at 48 E. Houston St., New York, in 1898, was the result of a little machine he was experimenting with at the time which “you could put in your overcoat pocket.” The bewildered newspapermen pounced upon this as at least one thing they could understand and Nikola Tesla, “the father of modern electricity” told what had happened as follows:

Tesla stated, “I was experimenting with vibrations. I had one of my machines going and I wanted to see if I could get it in tune with the vibration of the building. I put it up notch after notch. There was a peculiar cracking sound. I asked my assistants where did the sound come from. They did not know. I put the machine up a few more notches. There was a louder cracking sound. I knew I was approaching the vibration of the steel building. I pushed the machine a little higher. “Suddenly all the heavy machinery in the place was flying around. I grabbed a hammer and broke the machine. The building would have been about our ears in another few minutes. Outside in the street there was pandemonium. The police and ambulances arrived. I told my assistants to say nothing. We told the police it must have been an earthquake. That’s all they ever knew about it.”

5. Extraterrastrial Radio Transmitter – Teslascope, radio transceiver designed with the intention of communicating with extraterrestrial life on other planets. It received publicity after Tesla’s statement on the device was published by Time magazine in their July 20, 1931 issue celebrating Tesla’s 75th birthday.

  3. Cool. I never knew Nikola Tesla had a number of different inventions other than the tesla power system. If I’m not mistaken, many people refer to this invention as the TeslaCoil.

    very informative! Thanks!

That’s right. Tesla’s Coil is just one among many inventions.

    Thank you, I will!

Great post. I like Tesla, and people know too little about him and his inventions. He’s for sure one of the greatest people in history.

I love it! I just did an article on Tesla. One of his first uses for Radio (which he was the Inventor) was to demonstrate a Radio Control boat to the US Navy. It was the first unmanned controllable weapon system. They thought he was nuts. Now fast forward 100 years and the Navy is touting how they are “unmanning the front lines” He was only a 100 years a head of his time!

  10. danicar says:

Yes, I totally agree, his visionary projects were so futuristic and predictionary. He is the father of the Radio, I didnt put on purpose on Top 5 -the Radio as no.1 and no.2 indicates on it.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion for this great man. There are also many unrevealed things that he started and made patents…on that some other time.

  15. Joe says:

Embarrassingly, I have never even heard of Tesla until recently seeing the movie “The Prestige”, which was excellent.

I suspect those who follow Tesla probably have huge problems with the movie’s “cloning machine” portrayal of him, but they stated on the DVD bonus features that there are unknown machines of Tesla buried away somewhere.

Can followers of Tesla’s work please let someone with no knowledge of Tesla know what you think of that statement and also the movie’s general portrayal of him?

    Thanks in advance.

  16. danicar says:

I didnt see the movie, but Tesla’s ‘missing’ pattent and very-well known inventions can be read in many print and e-resources. Here;s very interesting documentary film on Nikola Tesla that you, as someone, as you said, who are not that familiar with his work, may get introduced by many interesting things. I posted it earlier this year, it’s good to watch it again:

    Hope you will find useful.
